Saint Sebastián Majorca
Like every year, on January 20th, Palma will celebrate once more the day of its patron Saint Sebastián. Saint Sebastián was proclaimed patron of the city after protecting it from a terrible plague in 1523.
Activities and events take place practically during the whole month of January. The celebrations start on the Revetlla de Sant Antoni (St Anthony’s Eve) on the 16th with bonfires, barbecues and dancing devils on the streets. The night before Sant Sebastià, (January, 19), stages are built up in the squares of the old part of the city, fires are lit up and many free live concerts are held while people enjoy not only different music styles in each square (flamenco, jazz, rock, etc.) but also the excellent atmosphere and the tasty food they have bought with them and grilled on the barbecues. On San Sebastian’s day itself, after mass is held in the Cathedral to honour the Saint, a cycling diada takes place with many families participating and riding through the whole city. In the evening there is a wonderful spectacle of fireworks in the Bay of Palma.
